Photo: Ngoc Tai \/ Tuoi Tre<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"outer-body\">\n<article class=\"art-body fck ui-rail\">\n<div id=\"content-body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">HungHau Foods, a company based in Ho Chi Minh City, currently makes 100,000 rice-flour straws a day at its plant in Sa Dec, which is a city in Dong Thap Province, Vo Minh Khang, its general director, said.<\/p>\n<p>The firm will expand the capacity by five times this month, Khang added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These eco-friendly straws have been introduced to such markets as South Korea, Japan, European countries and purchase deals have been signed, the executive revealed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In Vietnam, many distributors have approached HungHau for an exclusive deal while high-end restaurants and hotels are the target segment, Khang said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"outer-img fancybox\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.3em\" data-caption=\"&lt;em&gt;Workers handle rice-flour straws at a plant in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province, Vietnam. Photo: Ngoc Tai \/ Tuoi Tre<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI have been to many countries where environment-friendly products are favoured,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cMy company are good at making rice-flour products so we have researched and started production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIt amazes me that consumers\u00a0have\u00a0responded so well to our straws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">HungHau explored ways to make the rice-flour straws for one year before rolling them out four months ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe faced such difficulties as finding the formula and machinery to ensure the straws are hard to be broken, stiff enough, and evenly made,\u201d the executive confided.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These straws can be kept at room temperature for 18 months whereas the duration will be shortened to 30-120 minutes when they are put in normal or cold water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The straws come in white taken from rice, green from amaranth spinach, purple from beetroot, and black from sesame seeds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">They are eatable but the producer warns against consuming too many straws a day.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"outer-img fancybox\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.3em\" data-caption=\"&lt;em&gt;Vo Minh Khang, general director of HungHau Foods, introduces the products at its factory in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province, Vietnam.
