Not only increasing by more than 50% over the same period, agricultural exports in the first 2 months of 2024 have affirmed their position by conquering difficult markets such as the United States and Europe.
Sweet fruit
A report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that in the first 2 months of the year, the total export turnover of agriculture – forestry – fishery products (AFF) was estimated at 9.84 billion USD, an increase of 50.3% over the same period last year ( CKNT); Trade surplus of 2.68 billion USD increased nearly 2.9 times compared to CKNT. Contributing to this result are: Agricultural products 5.18 billion USD, an increase of 55.7%; Forest products 2.9 billion USD, up 59.7%; Seafood 1.37 million USD, up 28.9%; Livestock 78 million USD, up 15.1%; Production input 309 million USD, up 13.6%.
Most key products achieved higher export value than CKNT, such as: Wood products 1.68 billion USD (up 59%); Coffee 1.38 billion USD (up 85%); Vegetables and fruits 970 million USD (up 72.8%); Rice 708 million USD (up 49.8%); Cashew nuts 595 million USD (up 68.2%); Shrimp 403 million USD (up 20.5%). Pangasius alone is 224 million USD (down 0.7%).
Sharing more about fruit and vegetable exports, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that in the first 2 months of the year, the export turnover of this product reached approximately 1 billion USD. This is the premise for the fruit and vegetable industry to achieve its goal of over 5 billion USD this year.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development assessed that the above results are not only the efforts of the Agriculture sector in the first 2 months of the year but also the process of restructuring the entire industry, gradually shifting production to the market. “This is a very happy signal for us to have a premise to prepare for reaching the target export turnover of 54 – 55 billion USD in 2024” – Deputy Minister said.
The United States is the largest export market
According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the export value of AFF products to all markets increased. Of which, exports to Asia reached 4.55 billion USD (up 43%); Americas 2.31 billion USD (up 74.2%); Europe 1.28 billion USD (up 52.6%); Oceania 135 million USD (up 48.8%) and Africa 129 million USD (up 60.4%).
The United States, China and Japan continue to be the three largest export markets; However, the good news is that the US market is having great growth. Export value to the United States accounted for 21.5%, an increase of 77.3%; followed by China accounting for 21%, an increase of 47.9% and Japan accounting for 7.2%, an increase of 29.2%.
“It can be seen that in previous years, China accounted for a very high proportion of exports but now it is behind the US market. Through this, we can see that the quality of Vietnamese agricultural products has been improved because the US and Europe are markets that require very strict standards and regulations” – Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien commented.
However, the leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development did not forget to emphasize the importance of the Chinese market with many favorable conditions for exporting Vietnamese agricultural products such as large population, favorable geographical location,… ” If continuously opened up with solutions such as smart border gates on railways and roads, the potential and advantages of Vietnamese agricultural products exported to China will be even higher” – Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said, At the same time, he said that in the coming time, the Agriculture industry is preparing to sign a Protocol with China on exporting coconuts, frozen durian, seafood… These are all huge potential industries.
Sharing about the potential for exporting Vietnamese agricultural products, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that currently there are more than 200 countries and territories that have Vietnamese agricultural products. However, the brand, scale and product ratio have not met the existing potentials and advantages, and have not opened up the market. “There have been positive results, but to “liberate” the potential of agricultural products, we still need to put in more efforts and efforts” – Deputy Minister affirmed.
Emphasizing that Vietnamese agricultural products have entered some difficult markets, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that regions and countries in the world all have protection for domestic production. “That shows that updating the requirements of each market is very important. Those updates are the premise for the Agriculture industry to restructure production towards digital transformation, green economy, circular economy…, responding to market signals,” Mr. Tien noted.
