New signal for fruit and vegetable export

(ABO) Official export of vegetables and fruits, focusing on fruits, is a very important destination, contributing to increasing farmers’ income.

One of the bright spots in Tien Giang’s export structure in recent months of 2024 was brought back from vegetable and fruit exports.

Data up to November shows that Tien Giang’s vegetable and fruit exports reached about 46,528 tons, with a turnover of more than 112 million USD, an increase of more than 86% in volume and nearly 79% in value over the same period. One of the notable points is that Tien Giang’s durian exports to the Chinese market in the first 9 months of 2024 accounted for 47% in value of the province’s total vegetable and fruit export turnover.

According to records from professional agencies, the export of fruits and vegetables of Tien Giang province, especially fruits exported to markets such as the US, EU, Australia, Japan, Korea, etc., has created impressive results for the fruit and vegetable industry since the beginning of the year. With the rise of the fruit and vegetable group, along with maintaining stable growth rates of other product groups, it is expected that in 2024, the export turnover of Tien Giang province will reach 6 billion USD, reaching 120% of the 2024 plan, up 10% over the same period.

Durian has brought in very high export value recently.

With this figure, Tien Giang still maintains its position in the top group of provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta in terms of export turnover value. And if this figure is achieved, Tien Giang will have also completed early the target set in the resolution by 2025 of the Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee on export turnover value (the target is 4.5 billion USD).

Further analyzing the export situation of Tien Giang, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang province Luu Van Phi said that the bright spot in Tien Giang’s agricultural exports in recent times is the rise of durian products. Accordingly, the province’s durian exports account for a very high proportion in the province’s fruit and vegetable export turnover structure.

Of course, this is only statistical data, but if calculated according to data from enterprises exporting through unofficial channels and consignment channels, the fruit and vegetable export turnover of Tien Giang is much higher. In 2023, the country’s durian export volume alone reached about 2.3 billion USD, of which Tien Giang is one of the three provinces with the highest durian export volume.

Another positive sign is that in the coming time, coconut exports to China will be cleared, creating a very favorable market for Tien Giang’s coconut products. This contributes to opening up the export of vegetables and fruits in general, and fruits of Tien Giang in the coming time. Particularly for the domestic market, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also strengthens connections with trade centers and wholesale markets to expand consumption channels for agricultural products in general, and fruits in particular, because the export rate is still relatively low compared to the total annual harvest output of the province.

Looking at the bigger picture, the country’s fruit and vegetable export turnover in the past months of 2024 is currently at its highest level ever, with durian being the key product, reaching a value of 2.5 billion USD. Other fruits such as dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit and mango also contributed significantly to export growth. Accordingly, among the 10 main markets importing Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, most recorded strong growth, except for the Netherlands. China continues to be the largest market with a turnover of 3.4 billion USD in the first 9 months of the year, up 36% over the same period in 2023. Followed by the United States, South Korea and Thailand with import value growth of 35% – 90%. It is forecasted that the country’s fruit and vegetable export turnover in 2024 may exceed 7 billion USD, far exceeding the set target.

Of course, China is a very large consumer market for Vietnamese agricultural products. In particular, after the Protocol on official durian exports to this market took effect from July 2022, the durian export turnover of the whole country in general and Tien Giang in particular has continuously increased, contributing to the increase in domestic consumption prices, and the lives of farmers have also changed significantly.

Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) Nguyen Quang Hieu, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market are forecast to reach from 4.5 to 5 billion USD in the whole year of 2024. For durian alone, it is estimated that by the end of September 2024, it had exceeded the 2.5 billion USD mark and is expected to reach more than 3 billion USD by the end of 2024. This is one of the most optimistic signals for the agricultural sector of the whole country in 2024.
