Driving force to attract and promote the development of processing industry

The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program not only brings agricultural products to domestic consumers, aiming for export, but also attracts a large number of cooperatives, units, and processing enterprises, thereby forming a value chain of products.

Forming a value chain from production to processing and consumption

After 4 years of implementing the OCOP Program in practice, Dong Nai has 232 OCOP products with 3 stars or more, which are typical products and strengths of the locality. The program has formed many product value chains from production to processing and consumption. To date, the whole province has nearly 200 linked chains with the participation of more than 100 enterprises and 65 cooperatives (HTX). In which, relevant departments and branches organize many programs to support OCOP products to build a linked chain from production to consumption.

As a purely agricultural district, Cam My focuses on implementing the OCOP Program. To date, the entire district has 20 products certified as OCOP; of which 18 are 3-star OCOP products, 2 products are recognized as meeting 4-star OCOP standards. Many agricultural products and fresh fruits are certified as OCOP such as: Xuan Duong durian, Sau Hiep durian (Xuan Que commune), Lam San pepper, Xuan My green-skinned grapefruit, Song Nhan rambutan…

The district is continuing to focus on mobilizing production and business entities to maintain and improve the quality of OCOP products to better meet both the quality and product diversity needs of the consumer market. Thereby, contributing to building local agricultural product brands and trademarks.

Director of Toan Thang Import-Export Trading Company Limited (Cam My district) Truong A Vung commented that durian only has one harvest per year. When the enterprise implements the additional processing and making of frozen durian, consumers can enjoy this specialty all year round. The domestic market is also a potential consumption channel for frozen durian products. Accordingly, the enterprise participating in OCOP, the frozen durian segment product of the enterprise has met the 4-star OCOP standard. This certification contributes to affirming the reputation of the product’s quality with domestic consumers.

Developing a closed model, investing in processing lines

An Hoa Hung Agricultural Cooperative (Bien Hoa City) was established in 2019, but 10 years before that, Ms. Hoang Thi Kim Oanh, Director of the Cooperative, researched the an xoa plant (a medicinal herb that is beneficial to health) and posted these research results on traditional medicine and medicinal herb forums. After many failed experiments, she created a satisfactory product, which was certified with a trademark called An Hoa.

To develop this product line, An Hoa Hung Agricultural Cooperative was born. From producing about 3,000 products/month at the time of its establishment, up to now, the Cooperative supplies 5,000 products/month, and the number of agents is continuously expanding. Notably, the Cooperative is a pioneer in developing a closed model, which is researching, growing, manufacturing and developing a line of medicinal herbs. An Hoa products are also one of the first 17 products to be ranked OCOP in Dong Nai and will be ranked 4 stars by 2022. Currently, the Cooperative is also researching other product lines to add to the product ecosystem in the direction of health care and protection to supply to the market.

In Trang Bom district, Thanh Binh Cooperative is a unit with 2 products achieving 3-star OCOP. Currently, the Cooperative has invested in harvesting lines to cold storage systems, preliminary processing machines, and processing banana products. On average, each year, the Cooperative exports 3,000 – 5,000 tons of fresh bananas, including many markets in Korea, China and partly to the European market.

Thanh Binh Cooperative is a pioneer in making codes for banana growing areas for export in the province. In particular, the Cooperative has 120 hectares of bananas cultivated in an organic direction, the average yield of bananas harvested per hectare fluctuates from 45 to 52 tons, increasing productivity and quality of products. This Cooperative has also invested in a harvesting chain to a cold storage system, preliminary processing and processing machines, etc.

According to Director of the Cooperative Ly Minh Hung, in addition to producing fresh bananas, the Cooperative also increases product value and diversifies the market by investing in a banana processing workshop. The Cooperative has also invested in a 500m2 preliminary processing and processing house with a banana harvesting chain system, dry agricultural product processing machines, flexible processing machines for all kinds of agricultural products, and a cold storage system. The Cooperative’s processed products are also quite diverse, such as: dried dwarf bananas, crispy dried bananas.

In addition to boldly investing in exporting bananas, Mr. Ly Minh Hung also researched making dried banana stems, fibers, and banana fibers for sale domestically and for export. This not only makes use of the discarded banana stems after harvest in the banana capital of Dong Nai but also opens up opportunities for sustainable banana development for farmers.

In 2 years (2021 – 2022), the cooperative will produce 6 – 10 tons of banana stalks and banana fibers per month for export to other countries as raw materials for handicraft products. Accordingly, the average income of the cooperative is about 3 billion VND/year; creating jobs for dozens of local workers with an average income of nearly 6 million VND/person/month. Ms. To Thi Nga, Director of Nga Bien Import-Export Company Limited (Xuan Hung Commune, Xuan Loc District) said that in the past, the enterprise only exported raw materials or made products in the form of processing for other units, so when the products reached consumers, there was no information about the enterprise. Currently, the enterprise creates labels with full information to introduce to consumers. With the desire to increase product recognition with domestic consumers, the enterprise registered to participate in making OCOP products.
