Vietnam’s processed fruits and vegetables exceeded 1 billion USD, the highest ever

According to the latest data just released by the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, by the end of 2023, Vietnam’s export of processed fruit and vegetable products will exceed a turnover of 1 billion USD. This is the highest level ever.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, processed fruits and vegetables currently account for about 21% of total fruit and vegetable export turnover. Main markets are America, Europe, Japan, Korea. Recently, China has also become an important market for importing this product.

The main processed products of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are mangoes, passion fruits, almonds, pistachios, canned fruits, bottled juices… growing 22-60% over the same period last year. Raw material areas are increasingly improving in both output and quality, along with a series of free trade agreements that are the reason this industry maintains its growth momentum.

Explaining the boom in processed fruits and vegetables, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – said that to date, Vietnam has signed 16 free trade agreements. Thanks to these agreements, goods enjoy many tariffs, and there are markets with 0%. This is a competitive advantage for processed fruits and vegetables.

The proportion of processed fruits and vegetables in Vietnam is still low, so the development potential is still very large.

In particular, through the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become clear that exporting fresh agricultural products in the long term will still face many difficulties, while processed agricultural products can go further, not depending too much on transportation. shifting while consumer demand tends to increase.

However, according to Mr. Nguyen, most of Vietnam’s processed agricultural products, especially in frozen form, sold in international markets are in the form of raw materials for processing into food and beverage products. . This makes Vietnamese fruit and vegetable brands not well known.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, processed fresh fruit output still accounts for a low proportion, about 4.5 million tons (equivalent to 14%) of the annual harvest of 31 million tons.

Currently, Vietnam has 150 fruit and vegetable processing factories with modern technology with a processing capacity of nearly 1.1 million tons/year. However, these factories can only process about 8-10% of fruit and vegetable output each year. Therefore, the potential to promote Vietnam’s processed fruits and vegetables is still very large.

It is forecast that processed fruit and vegetable exports will continue to grow by about 20-25% this year.
