Musang King durian prices in Vietnam have doubled from October to around VND400,000 ($16.10) per kilogram as harvest season begins.
Traders are paying VND380,000 to VND430,000 in the Mekong Delta region for the highest quality fruit.
Prices have shown a strong recovery from a steep drop in October.
Trader Thu Hai said that the harvest season had started and there was low supply even though demand for exports is high.
The highest quality fruits are set to ripen in the coming weeks and many customers look forward to buying them, she added.
Another trader Dang Manh Khuong said that many customers in Russia, the U.S., Germany and Dubai were looking to buy Musang King durian from Vietnam.
Some farmers have stopped growing the fruit in recent months due to unproductive crops and unfavorable weather, which led to a decline in supply.
Musang King, a native variety of Malaysia, is difficult to grow in Vietnam as it requires high farming skills, according to the Vietnam Gardening Association.
Vietnam exported $2.3 billion worth of durian last year, up 4.8 times from 2022, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. China bought 91% of total.
