According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first half of February 2025, Vietnam’s durian exports to China dropped sharply by 80%, reaching only about 3,500 tons. The main reason for this decline is China tightening its quality inspection for frozen durians, particularly regarding cadmium and Auramine O (Basic Yellow 2 – BY2) residues. These regulations were enforced after some frozen durian shipments from Thailand were found to violate food safety standards.

Currently, China requires all imported frozen durian shipments to undergo residue testing at accredited laboratories. This process prolongs the export procedure, delaying testing and delivery. As a result, there has been congestion at border gates, affecting the export progress. Although some traders have turned to the gray market to resolve this issue, it is not a sustainable solution and could damage the reputation of Vietnam’s fruit export industry in the long run.
