Durian products from a ‘negligible’ turnover have risen to become the most important export item.
The most important export item
According to Tien Phong, preliminary statistics released by the General Department of Customs show that fruit and vegetable exports in the past eight months are estimated at $3.5 billion, up nearly 56% over the same period last year. This is an all-time record high for the fruit and vegetable industry. In particular, durian products from a “negligible” turnover have risen to become the most important export item.
According to the General Department of Customs, this figure is higher than the export turnover of vegetables and fruits of the whole of last year. Among the fruit and vegetable groups, durian and dragon fruit are the major contributors to this growth. Durian export in 8 months accounted for 30% of total turnover.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – said that the export of vegetables and fruits increased sharply due to the reopening of the Chinese market. Like durian, last year’s export turnover was insignificant, but after only one year of being licensed for official export, it became Vietnam’s largest fruit and vegetable export. Especially, in the coming time, when most of the supply in Southeast Asian countries is no longer available, the export of this item may reach 1.5 billion USD this year.
According to a representative of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the near future, Vietnam’s jackfruit will also increase sharply in the Chinese market when the country’s demand increases. Currently, China considers for Vietnamese fresh coconut to be officially exported. If approved in the near future, Vietnam’s coconut exports will have many breakthroughs when recently, the US has just let Vietnam export fresh coconuts (green peeled and partly white fiber).
Information from the Industry and Trade newspaper, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that the reason for the sharp increase in durian exports was that in May and June, during the harvest season of this fruit in the southern provinces, the volume of goods exported to the market. China spiked. From August to the end of the year will enter the main harvest in the Central Highlands. As a result, production will skyrocket and durian exports will exceed $1 billion.
Currently, the purchase price of durian is increasing sharply due to the Western goods at the end of the season. At gardeners, the price of first-class durian is for sale from 85,000 to 100,000 VND/kg, twice as high as in the same period last year.
Recently, the price of Vietnamese durian has been bought at a high price by Chinese businesses and small businesses. In addition, the shipping time is short, Vietnamese products are always fresh and delicious, so they have strong competitiveness compared to Thai products.
Statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Trade show that vegetables and fruits exported to main markets in the first 7 months of 2023 have grown well, except for the US market, Taiwan market (China), Thailand and Australia. . Leading in export value is the Chinese market, reaching US$2 billion, up 128.5% over the same period in 2022. Exports of vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market have high growth, contributing to promoting the fruit and vegetable industry. positive growth in 2023, because the export value to this market accounts for 64.7% of the total export value of vegetables and fruits.
Followed by exports to the US market reached 140.5 million USD, down 11.2% over the same period in 2022; to Korea reached 125.1 million USD, up 13%; to Japan reached 105.6 million USD, up 5.5%… The import demand for fruit and vegetable products in these markets is large, but Vietnam only exports a small part of the total demand, so there is still a shortage. plenty of room for businesses to exploit.
Experts say that, in the context of global inflation, in 2023, China will be the most potential destination of Vietnamese agricultural products thanks to its explosive demand, close geographical location, low logistics costs and risks. than other markets.
Strengthening the quality control of exported agricultural products
Information from Tien Phong, Department of Plant Protection – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said that, despite a strong increase in exports, from the beginning of the year to now, countries importing Vietnamese agricultural products have discovered 370 lots. goods (banana, mango, dragon fruit, jackfruit, durian…) in 13 provinces and cities in the southern region have violations on plant quarantine.

“The Ministry of Justice is guiding the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop and soon submit these two draft decrees to the Government. The Ministry has assigned the Department of Crop production to act as the focal point to develop specific technical standards for each fruit and vegetable product. , fruit,” said the leader of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
