Fruits such as lychee, rambutan, longan, durian, avocado… are coming into season but will face certain obstacles in the consumer market when they are massively harvested.
Limited when agricultural products are in season
In order to support suppliers in developing and exploiting the market for this year’s crop as well as developing plans for next season’s products, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recently organized a Promotion Conference Program. trade with the Overseas Trade Service System in May 2024 with the theme “Promoting export of seasonal agricultural products”.
The conference was held at a time when many localities across the country were entering the harvest season of fruit products such as lychees and plums in the North; Longan, grapes, watermelon, dragon fruit in the South…
Mr. Vu Ba Phu, Director of the Department of Trade Promotion, said that more and more items and products bearing Vietnamese brands or products produced by domestic enterprises are present in supermarket chains and sales systems. retail, supply, international distribution in major markets around the world…
At the same time, product quality, competitive prices, improved production processes, and efforts to comply with requirements and regulations on product safety standards… are important factors that help Vietnamese agricultural products Conquer and win the trust of consumers in many demanding markets such as Europe, America, Japan and many other countries. Since then, Vietnam has become an important link in the global supply chain and value of agricultural products, despite the difficult factors that the global economy is facing.
However, according to Mr. Vu Ba Phu, currently, many important export agricultural product groups of Vietnam have high competitiveness and the ability to penetrate export markets that are and are about to come into season, such as: Lychees, rambutan, longan, durian, avocado… and will encounter certain obstacles in the consumer market when there is a massive harvest.
Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, said that Vietnam’s export products face some difficulties because of the short harvest time and fresh products that spoil quickly.
“The long geographical distance increases shipping time and costs. Competition from South American and Asian markets with the same products. Preservation technology is still limited, products undergo temperature changes during irradiation, so the original quality cannot be maintained, and freshness decreases significantly after the goods arrive at the port,” Mr. Do Ngoc Hung shared.
It can be seen that the scale of domestic production is still small, making it difficult to meet the quantity and requirements from importers. Currently, not many businesses have invested properly in packaging, packaging, design and promotion in many markets.
Increase the ability to penetrate the market for Vietnamese agricultural products coming into season
From the beginning of the year until now, exports continue to be a bright spot in the economic picture, maintaining a very impressive growth momentum. According to data from the General Statistics Office, export turnover in May reached 32.81 billion USD, up 15.8% over the same period last year.
In particular, the fruit and vegetable industry is one of the products with impressive export turnover compared to last year. The turnover in May was estimated at 700 million USD, up 7.4% over the same period last year. In the first 5 months of 2024, the preliminary trade balance of goods is estimated at a trade surplus of 8.01 billion USD.
Mr. Tran Quang Tan, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang province, said that since the beginning of the year, with the support of functional units, Bac Giang province has promoted exchange and cooperation with the government. Authorities and businesses of countries and territories such as China, the United States, Japan, Europe…
Along with that, the province regularly contacts and exchanges with wholesale markets, shopping center systems, and large supermarkets in the country to connect and promote lychee consumption; proactively prepare the best conditions for the production, processing, and consumption of lychees… Up to now, the harvesting and consumption of lychees is starting to take place very actively; The selling price of lychee ranges from 25,000 – 70,000 VND/kg.
However, Mr. Tran Quang Tan also pointed out bottlenecks that need to be removed when lychee is in season, such as local congestion at two border gates, Tan Thanh, Lang Son province and Kim Thanh, Lao Cai province; irradiation activities of lychee exported to the US; Access and negotiate to export lychees to international markets…
“Therefore, it is recommended that the functional units continue to coordinate with the authorities of other countries to create the most favorable conditions for lychee export activities and help promote the promotion and consumption of lychees. is common on domestic and foreign e-commerce platforms,” Mr. Tan shared.
According to Mr. Vu Ba Phu, in order for Vietnamese branded agricultural products to affirm their value on shelves in the international distribution system, export businesses and producers must constantly improve quality. product quality, adapting to regulations on quality standards, quarantine testing requirements, packaging, goods, traceability according to the requirements of the importing country…
“Localities and businesses need to increase the added value of seasonal fruits such as: Adding processed products such as dried fruit, fruit powder, canned products that can be consumed all year round…”, Mr. Hung share.
In addition, it is necessary to apply new technology to help prolong the preservation time of fruits by putting fruits into a state of hibernation, preserving living cells, using biological products, wrapping films, and preservatives that can be used. allowed to prolong fruit life.
