Watermelon is officially exported to the Chinese market

VOV.VN – The Plant Protection Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that it will send watermelon growing area and packaging facility codes to register with China. If approved, watermelon will be becoming the 14th type of agricultural product officially exported to China.

On average, each year, the export value of watermelon to the Chinese market is about 50 million USD. According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the fact that watermelon is allowed to be officially exported under the Protocol signed between Vietnam and China is expected to add 30% of value to this industry. ending congestion at border gates as well as stabilizing selling prices when watermelons are in harvest season.

Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Plant Protection Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the whole country currently has 162 watermelon growing areas and more than 1,000 packaging facilities in 38 localities that have been granted codes to exported to the Chinese market. To make good use of opportunities from this market, export businesses need to standardize from production to preliminary processing, export processing, and transportation to create a value chain.

According to Mr. Dat: “It must be proven that growing area codes apply and comply with “good agricultural practices”, good control of pests that can follow goods from harvesting and preliminary processing. , processing, packaging and exporting; building quality control and traceability systems to help comply with regulations of importing countries.
