Wide range of vegetables and fruits for official export

Ensuring standards and improving quality are the criteria that Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exporters aim to conquer large markets.

Fruit and vegetable exporters have standardized quality, product standards and packaging to penetrate difficult markets.

Continue to receive good news

From the end of 2022 until now, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable industry has continuously received good news when a series of fruits such as pomelo, passion fruit, banana, durian have been granted planting area codes and officially exported to major markets such as: China, America, Europe…

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), in June 2023, fruit and vegetable exports reached over US$723 million, up 79% over the same period in 2022. This is an explosive number, because historically over 30 years of this industry, the average export turnover of vegetables and fruits per month is just under 300 million USD.

Accumulated in the first 6 months of 2023, the export turnover of vegetables and fruits is estimated at 3 billion USD, nearly equal to the figure of 3.16 billion USD in the whole year of 2022. With this achievement, vegetables and fruits are now an export commodity group. largest exporter of agricultural products.

Regarding the export market, China continued to maintain the No. 1 position, with 63.5% market share, up more than 12.4% over the same period last year. Followed by Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands all grew well.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, CEO of Chanh Thu Fruit Import Export Group Joint Stock Company, said that the reason for such a strong growth is partly due to the protocols issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Agriculture and Rural Development) signed with the Chinese market, making fruit and vegetable export activities more favorable.

In addition, businesses in the industry are also increasingly aware of export standards, food safety and hygiene standards, thereby improving the quality of this agricultural product.

“Higher quality and competitive prices are advantages for Vietnamese agricultural products in the Chinese market in particular and the international market in general,” Vy said.

Constantly improving quality

Despite the remarkable growth, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of Vinafruit, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable industry has not fully exploited its advantages when it is the third source of supply for China (after Chile and Thailand) and the distance is quite far.

Meanwhile, Mr. Luong Van Tai, Commercial Attaché, Trade Office of the Vietnamese Embassy in China, forecast that by 2026, China’s fruit consumption and imports will reach 319 million, respectively. tons and nearly 15 million tons. Besides, the potential market for tropical agricultural products in the northern and northeastern regions of China is still large, which is an opportunity for many kinds of agricultural products, fruits and foods of Vietnam.

From a business perspective, Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy said that as a country with a rich agricultural background, Vietnam can fully meet the increasing demands of large markets such as China, the US, and Europe. However, in order to increase export output, according to Ms. Vy, businesses need to clearly define markets and products and carefully study the specific standards required by each country.

“For a long time, most Vietnamese people think that China is an easy market, so there is little investment to improve quality. But now they have many strict standards, on par with Europe, forcing exporters to follow in order to keep this market,” Vy said.

To be able to meet the standards from difficult markets, Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy shared, Chanh Thu has built a model according to GlobalGap, VietGap, FSSC 22000 standards… Accompanying farmers, persuading, guiding people to cultivate and grow crops according to export standards.

At the same time, in recent years, Chanh Thu has built a sustainable chain of links with cooperatives and traders, with full functions for businesses to boldly invest in the market, support farmers, improve product quality and sustainable brand building.

Similarly, as one of the official durian exporters to China, Thuy Fruit One Member Limited Liability Company has built a material area of over 1,200 hectares in Tien Giang, Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces.

Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy, Director of Thuy Fruit Company, said that in order to ensure the quality of durian fruit, in each growing area, the company arranges technical staff to guide growers to cultivate. , manufactured according to the standard.

In addition to China, fruit and vegetable exports also grew quite well in many other important markets such as Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, UAE or Malaysia.

According to Mr. Vo Quan Huy, Director of Huy Long An Co., Ltd., although many other areas are facing difficulties, banana exports are still favorable in important markets such as China, Korea and Japan.

Mr. Huy said, enterprises want to develop sustainably, they must have planting areas, associated with farmers; support and guide farmers to grow according to export standards.

“Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan once set out the goal of striving for Vietnam to become the world’s “kitchen”, businesses and farmers must unite to make safe products. This requires the formation of large specialized farming areas to meet export markets. Enterprises are required to ensure the quality required by the importer, “emphasized Mr. Huy.
