After 2 quarters of 2024, the agricultural picture recorded many bright spots. Notably, many agricultural export products have increasingly expanded their markets and are favored by international customers, which is demonstrated by the increase in both value and number of orders.
A report recently released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that the export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in July 2024 is estimated at 5.11 billion USD, an increase of 18.2% over the same period in 2023. Of which, the export of the main agricultural products group reached 2.45 billion USD; the forestry group reached 1.46 billion USD; the aquatic products group reached 880 million USD; the livestock group reached 48 million USD…
Positive signals
Many export items witnessed impressive breakthroughs, such as coffee reaching nearly 3.6 billion USD, up 31%, rice reaching nearly 3.3 billion USD, up 25%, vegetables and fruits reaching more than 3.8 billion USD, up 24.3% over the same period last year.
According to the General Statistics Office, the agricultural sector had a good start when maintaining stable growth, especially when agricultural production had both good harvests and good prices. Statistics show that, on average, in the first 6 months of 2024, the agricultural product price index increased by 10.29% compared to the same period in 2023, of which the price index of annual crops increased by 11.27%; perennial crops increased by 22.3%.
Agricultural experts commented that the above figures show encouraging signs for the Vietnamese agricultural sector.
With the efforts of the agricultural sector, in recent times, many types of fruits and agricultural products “made in Vietnam” have entered many markets around the world. In particular, with demanding markets such as the EU, the United States, Japan… being able to penetrate and gain a foothold in these markets shows that the quality of our agricultural export products is increasingly improved, meeting the needs of world consumers. Many export enterprises expressed that in the first 7 months of the year, the export activities of agricultural products and fruits of the enterprise were favorable, orders increased so revenue increased, showing that good feelings will come to the export activities of agricultural products throughout 2024. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung – General Director of Vina T&T Company said that in 2024, the company exported An Giang mangoes to the US and Australia for the first time, and also in this year, the durian products of this enterprise were also exported in a large quantity to the Chinese market. “Over the past 7 months, agricultural product exports have been very favorable, with increased export turnover,” said Mr. Tung.
According to Mr. Tung, thanks to the continuous expansion of consumption markets, the company’s fruit exports have grown quite impressively in the first half of the year. Many types of fruit have penetrated new markets such as the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
According to the leader of Tra Vinh Farm Company Limited, with products related to coconut nectar, in the first half of the year, this company recorded an increase of about 200% in export activities compared to 2023, focusing on the markets of Germany, the Netherlands, the US and expanding to the Australian market.
Stating the reason for the sharp increase in agricultural product export turnover, especially fruit, in recent times, agricultural experts said: Currently, Vietnam has many new types of fruit exported to many markets. Previously, there were exports but they were not recorded because they were not officially exported. Since durian was officially exported to China, grapefruit was exported to the US – New Zealand, longan was exported to Japan… agricultural and fruit exporting enterprises have had many opportunities to make a breakthrough.
According to industry experts, in order to reap the “sweet fruits” in exporting agricultural products in general, and fruits and vegetables in particular, there must be great efforts from managers as well as the business community in promoting investment in processing technology, promoting the increase of product quality, thereby enhancing competitiveness. And this is also an inevitable trend in the current context of integration.
Impressions from durian, rice, seafood
One of the brightest products in the picture of agricultural exports in recent times is durian. This fruit is considered by many enterprises as the “soul” of Vietnamese fruit because it is the most popular in import markets.
According to many enterprises, frozen durian exported to China is always priced well, usually 2.5 times higher than fresh durian, and enterprises receive many orders. Some enterprises export 2 containers of frozen durian each month.
Also a key economic sector, accounting for 4-5% of GDP and 9-10% of the country’s total export turnover, ranking 5th in export value (after electronics, garments, crude oil, footwear), according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the past 7 months, although it was very difficult to compete with shrimp from Ecuador, India, etc., many seafood enterprises said that shrimp export turnover and value continued to grow well.
Along with fruits and seafood, the rice export industry in the first two quarters of the year also recorded “sparkling” numbers. For example, for the first time, Vietnam’s rice was exported the most to the Philippines with nearly 1.94 million tons, worth more than 1.2 billion USD, an increase of more than 14% in volume and more than 40% in value. The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) said that the average export price of Vietnamese rice over the past 6 months has reached a record high: 636 USD/ton, up 18% compared to the average price of 538 USD/ton in the first 6 months of 2023. For example, at one point, the export price of Vietnamese rice to Brunei reached 959 USD/ton, to the US reached 868 USD/ton, the Netherlands reached 857 USD/ton, Ukraine reached 847 USD/ton, Iraq reached 836 USD/ton, Turkey reached 831 USD/ton…
According to VFA, import demand from traditional customers of Vietnam such as the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Ghana, Malaysia, Singapore… is high and increasing. In addition, rice exporting enterprises are also actively expanding to new markets such as the Middle East, Africa, South America, Korea, Japan…
Thus, it can be seen that the picture of agricultural and aquatic product exports is receiving positive signals. It is forecasted that in the second half of 2024, consumer demand will continue to increase, and export activities will continue to be busy during this period.
Therefore, export enterprises need to make efforts to seize the “golden opportunity” to accelerate in this final moment. And to seize the opportunity, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the decisive issue is still quality, ensuring credibility, meeting strict standards, and raising technical barriers to proactively meet all markets.
