According to the General Statistics Office, the export turnover of goods in June 2023 was estimated at 29.3 billion USD, up 4.5% over the previous month. Generally in the first 6 months of 2023, export turnover of goods is estimated at 164.45 billion USD.

Among the industries that contributed to export growth in the past 6 months, the export of vegetables and fruits, especially fruit products, is experiencing impressive growth, especially in the context of a decline in many key commodity groups. According to the latest preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, in the first half of June, fruit and vegetable export turnover reached US$361 million, up 206.7 percent over the same period last year. Notably, the export turnover of vegetables and fruits in the first half of June also surpassed seafood to become the largest export group of the agricultural and fishery sector. The results achieved in the first half of June have brought fruit and vegetable export turnover from the beginning of the year to June 15 to 2.387 billion USD, up 55.4% over the same period last year, equivalent to an increase in turnover of 851 million USD.

Notably, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to China are increasingly thriving, especially after China opened the official import door for durian products. Statistics of the General Department of Customs show that durian exports increased sharply in May, thereby bringing the total export turnover of this item in the first 5 months of the year to more than 503 million USD. In particular, durian exports to China alone reached a turnover of 477 million USD, accounting for 95% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the country. Thus, durian officially surpassed dragon fruit, becoming the product that brings the greatest value in Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable products. This is a very positive result from the fact that Vietnam officially signed the Protocol to officially export durian to China in July 2022.

Durian makes an important contribution to the export growth of the fruit and vegetable industry.

As for durian products, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Chairman of the Board of Directors – General Director of Vina T&T Group, said that since the official export of durian to China, this item has always dominated, the growth rate Currently, the Thai durian is at the end of the season and the season is about to end, so the opportunity for Vietnamese durian is great. “With the current export rate, durian exports will exceed the USD 1 billion mark and the fruit and vegetable industry can reach USD 4-5 billion. Regarding the reason for the strong growth in fruit and vegetable exports in recent months, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen said that the above result was due to China’s increase in buying after the “Zero COVID” policy was implemented. In particular, the Protocols signed with this country last year have helped Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export activities have many advantages. Along with that, this is the first year after 3 years of the pandemic that products such as dragon fruit, durian, mango and jackfruit have been purchased by China. This year, although China strictly controls technical barriers, food safety and hygiene, Vietnamese goods are increasingly high in quality and competitive in price, so they are favored by consumers. At the same time, this is also the year that the export turnover of vegetables and fruits has a sudden growth and can set a record ever. It is forecasted that fruit and vegetable exports can reach the target of 4 billion USD.

Regarding the export market, China continued to maintain the No. 1 position. The update of the General Department of Customs by market by the end of May 2023 recorded that the export of vegetables and fruits to China earned $ 1.286 billion, an increase of 80.2. % over the same period last year, equivalent to an increase in turnover of 572.3 million USD. Thus, in the Top 10 largest fruit and vegetable export markets of Vietnam, China leads with nearly 63.5% market share, an increase of more than 12.4% over the same period last year (turnover reached nearly 1.3 billion USD).
