BTO – Binh Thuan Department of Science and Technology on October 7th held a Conference on Development of Geographical Indications (GI) of Binh Thuan dragon fruit with the participation of representatives of leaders of related departments, Farmers’ Associations of districts, Union of Cooperatives, Union of Provincial Science and Technology Associations, enterprises, cooperatives, business households, dragon fruit production facilities in the province.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms. Mai Thanh Nga, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology emphasized that Binh Thuan has the largest area of dragon fruit in the country with about 30,000 hectares; of which over 9,000 hectares of dragon fruit are qualified VietGAP standard, about 500 hectares are produced according to GlobalGAP standards and are eligible to penetrate to fastidious markets.

Previously, Binh Thuan dragon fruit was granted the appellation of origin (geographical indication) in 2006 by the National Office of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology).
Therefore, organizations and individuals which produce dragon fruit for export need to create a brand name and register for GI protection.
The construction and development of GIs have become a strategy to conserve biodiversity, enhance commercial competitiveness, promote the potential of local resources, and at the same time contribute to combating commercial fraud; raising consumer awareness; increasing product competitiveness; contributing to improving product value, increasing profit value, promoting the process of agricultural and rural development.
At the conference, representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Department of Industry and Trade gave presentations on how to control, manage and use the GI of Binh Thuan dragon fruit; solutions to promoting trade promotion activities, expanding the market for dragon fruit consumption at home and abroad.
Leaders of the Department of Science and Technology guided the dissemination of regulations on the management and use of GI “Binh Thuan” for dragon fruit; solutions to developing Binh Thuan dragon fruit Gis, and so on. Thereby, the conference offered chances for state management agencies, associations, the business community, and enterprises to exchange and propose solutions to removing difficulties and obstacles, and orientations to make Binh Thuan dragon fruit development to meet the needs of international economic integration.
