Vietnamese durian sells well in Japan

Mr. Ta Duc Minh, Vietnam’s Trade Counselor in Japan, said that in the first two months of this year, the quantity of fresh durian imported from Vietnam exceeded that of Thailand.

In particular, Vietnam’s fresh frozen durian products occupy an overwhelming position and there are many businesses involved in importing in large quantities to be sold in Japanese supermarkets all year round.

Currently, durian and Vietnamese fresh longan are the best-selling fruits in Japan, but the price is high, so consumers are mainly high-income customers. The group of customers who eat the most is still the Chinese community and some ASEAN countries who are used to eating durian. Vietnamese durian exports to Japan with two products: fresh fruit and frozen durian. Compared to fresh durian, frozen durian costs about 14-15 USD/kg.

According to an enterprise specializing in importing and supplying fresh fruits to Japan, the price of fresh durian imported from Vietnam and sold in Japan has nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2022.
