In the last months of 2024, many countries increased their purchases of Vietnamese agricultural products, including fruits, coffee, and rice. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development assessed that with great efforts from enterprises, Vietnamese agricultural exports will reach 55 billion USD this year.

Many items reach billions of dollars

In the first 9 months of this year, among our country’s agricultural export products, durian emerged as the “king of fruits”. According to preliminary estimates from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, durian exports earned 2.5 billion USD in just 9 months, meaning that the export turnover of this fruit has broken the record of 2.24 billion USD for the whole year of 2023.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, commented that Vietnam’s durian exports this year will certainly exceed the 3 billion USD mark. Because this October, the Central Highlands provinces will enter the main harvest season. Off-season durian in the southwestern provinces will also be harvested in the last months of the year.

This is also the time when competing countries such as Thailand and Malaysia have finished their harvest season, so the price of Vietnamese durian will be very high. Currently, the price of durian in growing areas purchased at the garden fluctuates between 42,000-95,000 VND/kg depending on the type. This price helps farmers make a large profit from this fruit.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Director of a durian exporting enterprise in Buon Ho town (Dak Lak province), said that this year’s durian price is not as high as last year but is more stable. This makes it much easier for enterprises to purchase durian, ensuring export orders.

Vietnamese durian is highly appreciated for its quality compared to Thai products, and its price is also more competitive. Thanks to that, the amount of exported durian has increased and there is still much room for development in the Chinese market. This year, Mr. Thanh’s company plans to export nearly 500 containers of fresh durian to the Chinese market.

Another agricultural product with “huge” value is coffee. In the past 9 months, Vietnam has exported more than 1.1 million tons of coffee, reaching a turnover of more than 4 billion USD. Although the quantity has decreased, the value of coffee export turnover in the first 9 months has increased by 30%. During the same period, if rice exports reached nearly 4 billion USD, fruit and vegetable exports reached 4.8 billion USD. This is a group of products that is expected to have many breakthroughs in export turnover.

A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that if in the first and second quarters of this year, agricultural products were stored for at least 1-2 months, then in the beginning of the fourth quarter, products will only be stored for 1-3 weeks before being released. This shows that the export market is quite prosperous in the last months of the year. The fourth quarter is a time of many festivals, so countries will increase agricultural imports from Vietnam. Being proactive in raw materials, increasing deep processing and conquering many markets… will help our country’s agricultural sector continue to set record export figures.

In addition, the difficulties and complexities of the world situation are opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products to penetrate deeper into the markets of Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Europe. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as of September 2024, the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products of our country reached nearly 50 billion USD, an increase of about 20% over the same period last year.

Continuing to handle market issues

In addition to bright colors, the export of goods in general, agricultural products in particular, still face many difficulties and challenges. Storms, natural disasters causing damage, decreasing raw material sources, continuing to increase transportation costs … are barriers to the export of agricultural products of our country.

Meanwhile, export prices are not easy to adjust. More worryingly, raw materials that meet export standards, have growing area codes, traceability … are seriously lacking in many localities.

According to calculations, each year, agricultural product exports bring in more than 50 billion USD to our country. Although they are the pillars of the economy, production planning and market forecasting for the agricultural sector are still left open. Many products are growing rapidly, there are no binding regulations on production, only recommendations. Worryingly, being too dependent on one market also carries many risks.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina T&T Company, in order for agricultural products to “attract” more foreign currency, first of all, fruits must meet food hygiene and safety requirements, technical barriers, expand new types of fruits to markets and prevent diseases.

The most important thing is to raise the technical barriers of Vietnamese fruits to proactively meet all markets. When a market fluctuates, we immediately switch to another market. When another market emerges, we immediately offer Vietnamese fruits… Only then can exports go far, go deep, and grow sustainably.

From the above developments, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien is confident that the country’s agricultural sector will achieve the export turnover target of 55 billion USD. In the remaining months of 2024, the agricultural sector will continue to implement solutions such as improving deep processing capacity, focusing on building brands so that Vietnamese agricultural products have real value in the international market; promote trade, introduce advantageous agricultural products…

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to address market issues to facilitate agricultural exports, especially to the markets of China, the United States, and the EU; take advantage of international trade agreements, especially the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Vietnam – EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to boost exports of key agricultural, forestry and fishery products, and support businesses in signing new export orders.

“In addition to large, key markets such as China, the United States, Japan, and the EU, the agricultural sector is also actively coordinating with businesses to open new, potential markets such as the Middle East and Africa. These are fundamental solutions to promote the entire agricultural sector to reach the 2024 target and create a premise for the following years,” Mr. Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
